3 displaced from Walnutport home after fire

A family of three and their two dogs have been displaced from their Walnutport home after a fire broke out Thursday night.

Fire Chief Michael Wentz, of the Diamond Fire Company of Walnutport, said firefighters responded at 10:50 p.m. to a single home at 315 Birch St.

Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy fire out the rear of the home, Wentz said.

He said they had the bulk of the fire knocked down within about a half-hour, and that the fire was fully under control within an hour with extensive overhaul and checking for extension.

“The guys did a fabulous job,” Wentz said. “They stopped it and held it to that area.”

There were no injuries, he said, and the occupants, two adults and one child, were able to get out safely.

Wentz said firefighters were able to rescue two dogs from out of the basement of the home.

The family can’t occupy the home currently, as it had damage to the kitchen, dining room, and part of the living room, Wentz said.

Wentz said the cause of the fire is under investigation by a state police fire marshal, but that it isn’t suspicious.

He said the family is staying with relatives, and added the American Red Cross is assisting them as needed.

Wentz said firefighters remained on scene for about two-and-a-half hours.

He said also assisting at the scene were the Slatington Fire Department, Lehigh Township Fire Department, Palmerton Fire Department, Aquashicola Fire Department, Emerald Fire Company, Northampton Borough Fire Department RIT, Northern Valley Ambulance, Lehigh County Rehab Task Force, and Lehigh County Fire Chiefs Air Unit based out of Woodlawn Fire Department.

“I’d like to fully thank all the mutual aid departments for their assistance,” Wentz said.

“Everybody worked well as a team.

“I’m more than proud of our guys and all the mutual aid departments. It was fabulous.”

Wentz added that the Diamond Fire Company will do whatever it can to make sure the family is OK.

“My concerns are making sure the family is taken care of,” he said.

“We’re going to do whatever we can to help them.”
