Office open Saturday for ballot drop-off

Carbon County’s election office will be open Saturday to allow for anyone wishing to hand deliver their completed mail-in ballot to the office ahead of Election Day.

Commissioner Rocky Ahner said that while it may not be an ideal time, with weekend traffic through Jim Thorpe increasing significantly, the county is trying to provide enough options for voters who aren’t going to the polls on Tuesday but are still casting a vote.

The election office, located in the 44 Susquehanna St., Jim Thorpe building, will be open from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

“That’s 12 noon,” Ahner stressed. “Not 12:01 or 12:02. It’s noon. They’re opening up the office to accommodate people. I hope everybody uses their discretion and gets here before 12 o’clock.”

Commissioners’ Chairman Mike Sofranko said that people are probably wondering why the county picked a Saturday.

He said that this was the last possible time that the extended office hours could happen before Election Day.

“Is Saturday in Jim Thorpe on fall foliage a good day? Absolutely not,” Sofranko said. “But it is the last possible day that we can get all that done.”

For those who cannot make Saturday and would like to hand deliver their completed ballot, the election office will also be open for regular business hours on Monday.
