Heintzelman’s Meat Market closes

A long-standing meat market in Mahoning Township has shuttered its doors in large part to a previous smokehouse fire.

Heintzelman’s Meat Market, at 124 Mahoning Drive E, posted word of its closure on Facebook Wednesday afternoon.

“It is with the heaviest of hearts that I must post that we have had no option but to close Heintzelman’s Meat Market,” the post states.

“It has become extremely hard in these times to keep a small business going; bank fees, credit card company fees, the taxes they put on us small businesses and the increase in prices of not only the supplies we buy but additionally our insurance after the fire and utilities.

“We thank you all for welcoming us into your community for these past six years. We will miss all of you so much; your families, your stories and mostly your smiles.”

The building was listed for sale for the last few months.

“We have tried as hard as we could to recover from the fire, however insurance companies do not always allow you to replace exactly what you had. From all of us here thank you for being a part of our family and allowing us to be a part of yours.”

The business held a soft reopening in April 2023 several months after it was damaged when a smokehouse caught fire in December 2022.

Mahoning Valley Fire Chief Mark Ebbert said firefighters responded at that time to a structure fire that extended into the second-story soffit in the main building, as well as the roof on the storage side of the main building.

Ebbert said at that time there was moderate damage to the roof area, and that the second and first floors also had water damage.

He said the store itself was not affected.

Ebbert said the cause of that fire was accidental.

A smokehouse at the meat market also caught fire in July 2020.

Mahoning Valley Assistant Fire Chief Jay Michalik said that fire extended from the smokehouse to the back rear of the building.

No workers or firefighters were injured during that incident.
