Eldred seeks help with staffing needs

Eldred Township is assessing its staffing needs.

Supervisor Scott Clark said the township meeting on Oct. 16 that the township is going to work with the Meyner Center at Lafayette College to do an organization assessment and administrative staff review.

“We are anticipating retirements of several staff members in the next couple years,” Clark said.

At the Robert B. and Helen S. Meyner Center students study state and local government. As part of the review, they will interview the township’s staff to learn more about their duties.

Clark said that due to difficulties in hiring and other changes, they are trying to be forward thinking in preparing for what the township will need when the staff retire.

“We thought it was a good time to do an organizational assessment and staffing review. They will give us from their experience what they believe that the township should have for staffing,” he said.

The assessment will cost $4,255. Results should be received in December, and a presentation will be given to the supervisors on the findings in January or February of next year, Clark said.

In other business, Jonathan Gula, the supervisor of the Eldred Township Public Works Department, asked to table discussion of the Point Philip Road study until after the studies are complete.

“I believe the speed and the weight will have to go through ordinance,” Gula said.

Gula also said the cost to replace the sound system at the Eldred Township Community Center would be about $2,000. The work will be done in house by his department and will include 16 speakers in three zones. The center’s director will have a headset in the cashier’s room and two wireless microphones. The largest expense is the wire with 600 to 700 feet of wire needed. Gula said that at 65 cents a foot, he expects the cost of the project to be about $2,000.

Grants for various township projects were also discussed at the meeting.

Supervisor Clark said that in regards to the PIRMA grant for the playground project, the township had applied for this grant last year. The playground lies between the community center and municipal office.

“It is related to loss control and safety. It comes through our insurance company,” Clark explained. “We put in for it up to $5,000. I did hear that although we did not get it, we were in the final running.”

Clark said he wanted to reapply for the grant for the playground to make safety improvements on the equipment that is currently at the playground.

The following topics were also discussed at the meeting.

• Eldred Township Historical Society raised more than $3,000 from the Bingo fundraiser. A window is going to be repaired that was broken accidentally, and work on the porch repairs continue.

• Stone Arch Bridge — A Local Share Agreement grant in the amount of $941,602 will be applied for before November.

• Dollar General asked for an extension to April 8, 2025. Their current extension expires at the end of October. The extension was approved.

• Eldred Township Fire Department — the township approved its annual $30,000 donation to the fire department.

• Trick or Treat — 5 to 7 p.m. on Oct. 31.
