2 bear, 3 deer struck on turnpike; fire, other incidents investigated

Incidents on the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike have kept state police at the Pocono barracks busy.

In reports released Wednesday, police said there were five crashes involving animals, including two bears struck and three deer hit.

In addition, one incident involved a vehicle erupting into flames, there were two other hit-and-run crashes, and there was a traffic stop made where police found fake stickers on the vehicle.

The reports include:

• Juan M. Verdejo Guzman, 40, of Philadelphia, was uninjured when a 2021 Freightliner Cascadia he was driving northbound struck and killed a bear.

It happened at 8:23 p.m. Oct. 3 at mile marker 110.4 in Plains Township.

• Alan P. Cerep, 60, of Wilkes-Barre, was uninjured when a 2023 GMC Terrain he was driving northbound struck a bear. Police did not say whether or not the bear was killed.

It happened at 6:03 p.m. Oct. 3 at mile marker 95.4 in Kidder Township. Cerep was northbound at the time.

• Prince G. Johnson, 56, of Smyrna, Delaware, was uninjured when a 2021 Audi he was driving struck a deer.

It happened at 5:59 a.m. Oct. 7 at mile marker 56.4 in South Whitehall Township when he was northbound at the time.

• Jamie J. Davison, 43, of Larksville, was uninjured when a 2010 Subaru Outback he was driving struck a deer.

It happened at 4:57 a.m. Oct. 7 at mile marker 673.6 on North Whitehall Township when he was southbound at the time.

• Richard P. McLaughlin, 27, of Blue Bell, was uninjured when a 2013 Nissan he was driving struck a deer.

It happened at 2:02 a.m. Oct. 7 at mile marker 67.5 in Washington Township when he was northbound.

• The owner of a 2015 GMC Acadia that was stopped at 6:42 p.m. Oct. 6 at 679 Interstate 476 in Washington Township is facing charges.

Police said the vehicle was stopped for a suspended registration that was suspended for nonpayment of tolls. They said the vehicle’s annual and emission inspection stickers that had expiration dates of April, 2025, were found to be fake.

The owner is an Alfredo Mercado.

Police said victims of the incident are Kreiser’s Garage, Manheim, and Moyer Nissan of Lebanon.

• Police investigated a hit-and-run crash at 7:16 p.m. Oct. 5 at mile marker 70.2 in Franklin Township.

They said a 2024 Toyota Sienna driven by Kenneth J. Weiss, 60, of Pittstown, New Jersey, was southbound when an unknown vehicle came up from behind and sideswiped the driver’s side rear of the Sienna and continued south on the turnpike. Weiss and a passenger were uninjured.

• Police said a 2025 Volvo tractor-trailer caught fire at 12:38 p.m. Oct. 4 while the driver was northbound at mile marker 91.7 in Kidder Township.

Police said Jason A. Groves, 45, of Hunlock Creek, pulled the rig onto the shoulder of the road and attempted to extinguish a fire that erupted in the area of the trailer’s dual wheels.

Police said he was unsuccessful and the truck was detached from the trailer. Police said the fire consumed the trailer.

• Police were called to a hit-and-run incident at 4:25 p.m. Oct. 4 at mile marker 91.6 in Kidder Township.

They said John J. Vanbree, 59, of Ontario, was operating a 2024 Kenworth rig that slowed down for a backlog of traffic, at which time it was struck by a gray sedan that made a lane change, striking the passenger’s side of the rig. Police said the male driver of the striking vehicle continued northbound.

• State police at the Pocono barracks reported earlier that Sean Barno of Albrightsville was cited after police stopped a 2016 Nissan Rogue at 9:44 a.m. Sept. 24 on Interstate 476 in Washington Township.

Police said that he is the owner of the vehicle, which police stopped on the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike for having an expired registration. A check of the vehicle’s annual and emission inspection stickers indicated they were expired and were found to be fraudulent, police said.

The victims of the incident were identified by police as Leeds West Philadelphia, King of Prussia, and Mike’s Auto Sales, Stoystown.

Police did not say if Barno was the driver of the vehicle when it was stopped.
