The West Penn Township Lions Club held its annual Community Hero Award night Wednesday at the West Penn Park.
Each year, the West Penn Lions donate money to several local nonprofit organizations, groups that share the Lions’ motto, “We Serve.”
A total of $5,000 was donated to the following organizations: West Penn Community Park Commission, West Penn Fire Company, Penn Mahoning Ambulance, Tamaqua Salvation Army, Tamaqua Public Library, Tamaqua Adult Day Care Center, West Penn Community 4-H, and Cub Scout Pack 777.
The West Penn Township Lions Club was chartered on April 21, 1948.
The first major project was the electrification of the 12 one-room schoolhouses in the township.
The members followed that by clearing land and building structures to create the West Penn Community Park, which they continue to use for summer meetings, chicken barbecues and senior fun day.
