Nesquehoning

Bake sale fundraiser

Nesquehoning’s fundraising group will hold a bake sale from 9 a.m.-noon, Oct. 11 in front of the borough office building, 114 W. Catawissa St. Proceeds from the sale help raise funds for community events in the borough.

Historical society

The Nesquehoning Historical Society museum will hold a presentation on coal mining featuring musician Dave Matsinko and historian Vince Hydro at 1 p.m. on Sept. 28. Doors for the events open at 11 a.m.

Matsinko’s performance will include selections on various acoustic instruments of music reflecting the heritage of our local area.

Hydro will display images of the history of coal mining including first discoveries, types of coal mines, and the miners and their families.

The events will take place at the NHS Museum, 157 W. Railroad St., Nesquehoning. There is parking available in the large lot located next to the museums.

This event is open to the public free of charge, although donations to the Historical Society are always welcome.

Summit Hill Historical Society

The Summit Hill Historical Society will hold a special presentation of “Uranium in Carbon County” at 6 p.m. on Oct. 16.

The presentation, which will sort fact from fiction about uranium in the mountains will be presented by local history expert Vince Hydro.

Admission is free, but donations are appreciated. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. so you can browse the museum of local artifacts. There will also be a uranium glass display for your viewing pleasure.

The historical society is located at 1 W. Hazard St., Summit Hill.

Senior Center

The Panther Valley Senior Center announced the menu for Sept. 30-Oct. 4.

Monday: Corn Chowder, BBQ Chicken, Succotash, Orange or Beef Club Sandwich

Tuesday: Lentil Soup, Salmon Croquette, Green Beans, Peaches or Beef and Cheese Sandwich

Wednesday: BBQ Chicken, Sweet Potatoes, Brussel Sprouts, Cornbread, Apple Slices or Greek Salad

Thursday: Italian Sausage, Pasta Broccoli and Cauliflower, Cookie or Tuna Salad

Friday: Pork and Sauerkraut, Mashed Potatoes, Carrots, Pudding or Chicken and Cheese Sandwich

The senior center also announced the following events.

Entertainment with The Neil Diamond Experience on Sept. 27 at 11 a.m.

Games on Sept. 30 at 11 a.m. followed by the monthly basket raffle at 12:30 p.m.; Guest Bingo with Advantage Home Health on Oct. 1 at 11 a.m.; Po-Keeno on Oct. 2 at 11 a.m.; Crafts on Oct. 3 at 10 a.m.; Wii Bowling on Oct. 4 at 11 a.m.

Scattergories on Oct. 7 at 11 a.m.; Bingo on Oct. 8 at 10:45 a.m. Trivia on Oct. 9 at 11 a.m. and an Ice Cream Social after lunch; Jason Diehl will be here on Oct. 10 to talk about the new transport services provided by the Lehighton Ambulance; Po-Keeno on Oct. 11 at 11 a.m.

Cards, Pool, Games, available daily from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. New members are welcome.

Panther Valley Library

The Panther Valley Public Library will hold Fall Story Hour for children ages 3-5 on Oct. 2, 16 and 30; Nov. 6 and 20 and Dec. 4 and 18 beginning at 10 a.m.

There will be a story, craft and light snack.

To register a child, call the library at 570-645-3780. The event is free.

Medicare help

Appointments are now available at the Panther Valley Public Library, Summit Hill Heritage Center and Panther Valley Senior Center in Nesquehoning for seniors looking to save money on Medicare and prescription plans.

Appointments through Carbon County Area Agency on Aging will help individuals make the best decision on prescription plans for them.

Appointments are from 9 a.m. to noon at:

• The Summit Hill Heritage Center: Oct. 16, 23, 30; Nov. 6, 13, 20 and 27; and Dec. 4.

• Panther Valley Library: Oct. 18 and 25; Nov. 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29; and Dec. 6.

Appointments from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at:

• Panther Valley Senior Center: Oct. 22 and Nov. 19.
