Cocktails hit area store shelves
Long Island ice tea, anyone?
Giant Food Stores are now offering the mixed drink and other ready-to-drink cocktails at nearly all of its Pennsylvania locations with operating beer and wine departments.
Ditto for most Weis Markets, as well as select Redner’s, including one in Nesquehoning.
To sell the to-go drinks, supermarkets, gas stations, beer distributors and other businesses with retail liquor licenses were recently allowed to apply to the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board for permits. Those who were approved could begin selling the drinks Monday.
“Stores have already started to display and sell, and will continue adding varieties over the coming days and weeks,” according to Ashley Flower, spokeswoman for The Giant Company. She confirmed that Giant stores in Lehighton, Walnutport, Pottsville and Hazleton have the concoctions.
Weis Markets is selling the drinks at its Pottsville and Hazleton stores. And in addition to Nesquehoning, Redner’s spokesman Eric White said many of its Lehigh Valley stores will have the to-go drinks.
Other local businesses selling cocktails include Vista Fuels LLC, Lehighton; Beer Zone, Palmerton; Beltzville Beverage, Palmerton; Dunbar Bottling, Lehighton; Ashrah LLC, Interchange Road, Lehighton; Harmony Beverage in Lake Harmony; Sri Ambe Beverages LLC, Lansford; Beer Nuts, Brodheadsville; and ShopRite, Brodheadsville.
More locations are being added to the list.
Sales of the cocktails are allowed under the recently approved Act 86 of 2024. The legislation created the new permit, which authorizes the sale of premixed spirits-based, ready-to-drink cocktails ranging from 0.5% to 12.5% alcohol beverage by volume in original containers up to 16 ounces for off-premises consumption.
To date, the PLCB has received 1,595 applications and issued 1,416 permits. It will continue to review and approve permits as they are received.
The initial application fee for the permit is $2,500 per establishment, and the annual renewal fee is 2% of the cost of the drinks purchased for off-premises consumption, whether purchased from the PLCB or licensed Pennsylvania manufacturers.
The expanded sales are anticipated to generate $145 million for the state over the next five years.
“Thanks to our bipartisan budget, you can now get ready-to-drink cocktails – some made right here in Pennsylvania – at places like grocery stores and beer distributors, and we did it in a way that protects taxpayers and supports our state workers,” Gov. Josh Shapiro said Monday. “We’re going to continue to come together in a bipartisan way to get stuff done for Pennsylvanians and make this Commonwealth a great place to live and work.”
Giant Food Stores has permits for 138 of its stores.
“Our stores have been a destination for beer and wine since 2011 and 2016, respectively, and we have heard from our customers about the convenience of being able to grab ready-to-drink cocktails while grocery shopping, too,” said Rebecca Lupfer, senior vice president and chief merchant, of The Giant Company.
The ready-to-drink cocktails became available at 92 Pennsylvania Weis Markets on Wednesday.
“Introducing ready-to-drink cocktails to our Pennsylvania beer-wine cafes will offer both convenience and variety to our customers’ shopping experience,” said Bob Gleeson, Weis Markets senior vice president of merchandising and marketing. “This new offering allows our customers to find a wide range of premium, premixed cocktails all in one place, saving them an extra trip.”
