TASD repairing railing, discusses pledge
The Tamaqua Area School Board is looking at repairing the damaged railing along the Stadium Hill, or South Lehigh Street.
Superintendent Ray Kinder told board committee members Tuesday night that another section of the railing broke away, and they’ve placed temporary orange fencing along the steepest drop to keep people away.
The district sought quotes on the repair and replacement, and received “an extremely good price” from Rob Terleski Fabrication, Kinder said.
The board’s finance committee approved the repair at a cost not to exceed $22,800.
The work, which includes extending the railing all the way up the hill to the Raiders’ sign, would be completed in the spring.
Policies
The board will also look at approving numerous policies on first reading at its meeting next week.
Assistant Superintendent Dr. Stephen Toth had told the board last month that the state Department of Education sent out updates and new language on multiple policies.
Kinder said the board was provided information on the policy changes and recommendations, which were minimal. He asked board members to direct any questions to himself or Toth.
Board President Larry Wittig asked about the district’s policy on the Pledge of Allegiance, which is addressed in one of the policies they’re updating.
Kinder explained that students are asked to stand for the pledge, and if they choose not, they can sit quietly and not disturb anyone else. The pledge is done every day, he said.
The auxiliary committee approved these policies: educator misconduct; personal necessity leave, uncompensated leave; opening exercises/moment of silence/flag displays; and maintaining professional adult/student boundaries.
The education committee approved these policies: student discipline, pregnant/parenting/married students; hazing; bullying/cyberbullying; and dating violence.
The bullying/cyberbullying policy was reviewed last month, but changes are up for approval on first reading with the other policies this month, Kinder noted.
