Police say man pulls gun during parking dispute

A Jim Thorpe man has been charged with brandishing a gun following a parking space dispute at a Dollar General in Penn Forest Township.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by Trooper Richard Balderrama of the Pennsylvania State Police — Fern Ridge barracks in the case against Dante Matos:

Around 11:28 a.m. Aug. 30, Balderrama was dispatched to a home in the 2500 block of Route 903 for a report of a disturbance in the parking lot.

Upon arriving on scene, Balderrama met with the victims who related that they went to pull into a parking spot at Dollar General and a truck was blocking the spot they were trying to pull into.

One of the victims pulled into the parking stall next to the truck and that is when the operator of the truck, Matos, 36, pulled down his window and said “what’s up, what you trying to do.”

The victim related that is when Matos stepped out and began to argue with him, and that the argument was verbal until Matos brandished a firearm and the victim got back in his vehicle.

The victim said after Matos pulled the firearm out, he took it off his belt and placed it back inside his vehicle.

Balderrama contacted Matos, who was the registered owner of the truck. Matos confirmed that he had a verbal argument with the victim regarding the parking spot.

Matos also said that he never showed a gun or had a gun on him or in his possession.

After further investigation and verbal consent to search Matos’ vehicle, a gun was located under the middle console.

A query of Matos in their mobile data terminal determined that Matos was a felon not to possess.

Matos was then placed into custody and transported to PSP Fern Ridge barracks where charges were filed.

Matos faces charges of two counts each of possession of firearm prohibited and terroristic threats with intent to terrorize another.

Matos is currently free in lieu of $20,000 unsecured bail, and scheduled to have a preliminary hearing Wednesday before District Judge Beth A. Dodson of Lansford.
