The North Central Highway Safety Network’s Regional DUI Enforcement Group announced traffic enforcement details to include Sobriety Checkpoints and Roving Patrols to be conducted. These details were part of a statewide crackdown on impaired driving being conducted across the state. Specially trained officers and drug recognition experts, who can spot symptoms of drug-induced impairment were available to detect drug impaired drivers.
From 8 p.m. Aug. 23 to 2 a.m. Aug. 24, the Lehighton Borough Police Department conducted roving patrols to target impaired drivers.
A total of 22 vehicles were contacted, one operator suspected of driving impaired was arrested, one traffic citation and 22 warnings were issued or filed.
From 10 p.m. Aug. 31 to 3 a.m. Sept. 1, the Lehighton Borough Police Department conducted a sobriety checkpoint in two separate locations, in the borough of Lehighton.
Over 200 vehicles were stopped, with seven driver detained and tested for suspicion of being under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance.
Six of the seven people suspected of driving while impaired were arrested, three additional arrests made for narcotics violations, one felony wanted person was arrested, five traffic citations and 10 warnings issued or filed.
Sobriety Checkpoints are funded by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Formal charges are pending the results of the blood analysis for each impaired operator.
