Groups band together for benefits

In addition to reviving the annual Trunk or Treat, a group of Nesquehoning residents are working to create a stronger community feel through various events.

On Wednesday, Councilwoman Suzanne Smith thanked Councilwoman Lois Kuba for spearheading several events to help promote the area.

Earlier this year, volunteers organized two bake sales to raise funds for Go Joe 27.

Now they will be holding two more bake sales to help the community.

Bake sales will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Sept. 13 and Oct. 11 in front of the borough office on West Catawissa Street.

Proceeds from the first sale will help with updating American flags that fly with the Hometown Heroes banners.

The second will benefit community events.

Kuba said that there are a lot of good baked goods that typically come from resident bakers.

Anyone wishing to donate baked goods for the upcoming sales can contact Kuba, Smith or Mary Fox.

In addition to the bake sales, Smith said she is looking forward to working with New Columbus and Hauto on doing a Christmas event and raise money to do events and give back to the town.

“That’s why we’re all here,” she said. “We’re really trying to keep the momentum going, from the Easter Egg hunt in the park, then we had Go Joe. (It’s) to try and bring events in for our kids and all residents of the community instead of having to drive miles to take part in another community event. It’s just bringing them back here and working together to do it.”

Smith added the volunteers are hard to find nowadays and commended those who have taken up the cause, whether it be for fundraising efforts or the three fire companies.

“They need the help,” she said.
