Tamaqua Council approves hirings, resignations

The Tamaqua Borough Council handled a few hirings and approved several resignations during a recent meeting.

Maria Derr was hired as a full-time police department clerk at a rate of $18.29 per hour effective Sept. 9.

Brian Clouser was appointed as a full-time street maintenance worker at an hourly rate of $25.90 effective Sept. 9.

Council accepted the resignation of Edith Moyer, police department secretary. Her last day will be Jan. 17.

Eric Nelson Jr. submitted his resignation from the borough’s water authority. His last day was Aug. 16.

In an unrelated matter, council approved a request from Helping Harvest food bank to hold its monthly mobile market at an area near the Dutch Hill baseball field.

The Berks County food pantry had held distributions from a parking lot near the Tamaqua Middle School, but moved to a site across from the Hometown Farmers Market in Rush Township.

“It wasn’t working,” council President Brian Connely said of the Hometown site.

Connely spoke to the Rev. Rick Clemson, pastor of American Primitive Methodist Church in Tamaqua, which hosts the Tamaqua Area Food Pantry. The two discussed potential sites for the mobile market.

“We thought, ‘What about the baseball field parking lot on Dutch Hill?’,” Connely said.

The area would provide better traffic flow and access, he said.

Council will advise the Tamaqua Area Baseball Association even though the daytime distributions will not interfere with any of the games. The move becomes effective in October.
