Slatington chief cites safety concerns

The Slatington police chief wants to make a portion of Church Street safer, borough council was told at a meeting earlier this month.

Chief Greg Winokur was not in attendance, so Mayor Jeralyn Schoch read the chief’s request.

Winokur would like the council to approve more signs and possibly speed bumps for the 300 block of Church Street.

Safety was called a concern because the narrow street is busier since the Walnut Street bridge is closed; speeding is an issue; and children play in the street in that area.

Council also approved:

• A quote for $6,295 from Walnutport Door to install two new exterior steel doors on the Slatington Fire Station.

• A change to an ordinance for height restriction for vehicles on West Center Avenue to a maximum height of 9 feet.

• A proposed fire alarm system ordinance that would fine residents if the ordinance is violated.

• A request from St. John’s UCC to hold its annual Peach Festival on Saturday at Slatington Memorial Park.

• A request from Andreas Hassold to hold the fourth annual block party on Pine Tree Drive on Sept. 7 from noon to 10 p.m., with road blocks.

• A change in the date from June 7, 2025, to May 31, 2025, for the St. Luke’s 14th Annual Bike Ride.

• Council elected Ryan Mayberry its new president pro tem and approved placing a bench in Victory Park to honor the memory of Walter Niedermeyer, the former longtime mayor who was serving on council when he died earlier this year.
