Wall of Tamaqua home falls into street

Tamaqua officials and emergency personnel were dispatched Tuesday afternoon to a partial structural collapse at 248-250 East Mauch Chunk St.

No one was hurt, but demolition on the building began this morning.

During Tuesday evening’s borough council meeting, council voted unanimously to apply for an emergency demolition permit.

Borough Manager Kevin Steigerwalt said he and other borough officials visited the site after the collapse.

“Quite a sizable portion of the wall fell down,” he said.

Steigerwalt said the property owner and his engineer were contacted. The borough also notified its engineer.

“It’s looking to us, from our experience, that it is going to have to be a demolition,” Steigerwalt said.

“There were no injuries. There may have been people in it when it collapsed, but there was no one injured,” Steigerwalt said.

Power to the property was disconnected.

According to reports, side brick wall fell onto the sidewalk and a portion of Greenwood street.

The home is vacant and was under renovation. The building is the end unit of a string of row homes.

Tamaqua fire police maintained traffic control at the scene and shut down Greenwood Street between East Broad and Mauch Chunk streets.

Schuylkill property records show the owner as 248-250 Mauch Chunk Street LLC of Chevy Chase, Maryland. It was purchased for $140,000 in January.
