Rush residents question turning restriction to 309

A handful of Rush Township residents turned out to Thursday’s board of supervisors meeting to ask that Wayne Avenue not be restricted to right turns only onto Route 309.

Robert Leibensperger, the board’s vice chairman, said the right turn only was being considered because there is no line of sight from Wayne Avenue onto Route 309. Furthermore, he said, crashes have been reported at the intersection.

“I think it is a no-brainer. It has to be a right only,” Leibensperger said.

Residents, however, said they weren’t aware in favor of restricting it to right turns only. Motorists, they said, can travel straight onto Route 309 with no problems — assuming that they check for oncoming traffic.

After some discussion, the board voted to bar left turns from Wayne onto Route 309. Heading straight onto Route 309 is permissible.

In the motion to stop left hand turns from Wayne, supervisors asked Police Chief Rick Weaver to keep a tally of any accidents that occur there.

Supervisors also dropped a plan to make Dennison Street at Route 309 a right turn only street.

“I don’t feel unsafe if I’m traveling left, right or straight,” explained Bill McMullen, who spoke as a resident and not as the township engineer.

Police Chief Rick Weaver also said he didn’t feel that a right turn only was needed on Dennison Street.

“I sit there. I’m patient,” he said of entering Route 309 from Dennison.
