Carbon County Commissioners

The Carbon County Commissioners approved or discussed the following items during their weekly meeting on Thursday.

• Announced the new dates for the Mauch Chunk Lake Park movies on the beach night after weather canceled the movie this past weekend. The new movie nights on the beach are Aug. 24 and Sept. 28.

• Adopted a proclamation naming August as Child Support Enforcement Awareness Month.

• Listed correspondence from the Carbon County Court of Common Pleas naming Janene Holter, chief adult probation officer, as Carbon County’s DUI coordinator, effective Jan. 1, 2025.

• Appointed Louisa Krause of Mauch Chunk Trust Bank as a community representative on the AAA Advisory Board. The position is a three-year term.

• Reappointed Paula Fougeray of Lehighton to a five-year term to the housing authority.

• Accepted a grant from the Carbon County Community Foundation in the amount of $500 from Christman Teams Cares Fund to the Carbon County Animal Shelter for program support.

• Ratified a grant application submission for Act 2022-88 Election Integrity Grant funds through the Department of State to support county election administration in the amount of $225,845.02. The funding provides financial help with staying in compliance with requirements related to pre-canvassing, canvassing, absentee and mail-in ballots data, voter list maintenance, printing of ballots, training costs for district election officials, payment of staff at polling places on Election Day, secure preparation, transportation, storage and management of voting apparatuses, tabulation equipment and required polling place materials, costs related to processing of voter registration applications and post-election auditing.

• Authorized a notice for a public hearing for the commissioners to consider an application for the 2024 ESG Program on behalf of Family Promise of Carbon County in the amount of $80,000. Comments from the public can be emailed to commissionersoffice@carboncounty.net until 9 a.m. Aug. 28.

• Approved an independent contract agreement with Lisa A. Marks of Jim Thorpe at a rate of $50 per hour. Marks will provide services for Human Resources through Jan. 31, 2025.

• Approved the initial allocation for the MATP program from the Department of Human Services in the amount of $1,439,000.

• Approved a change order for the Packer Township street improvement on Ochre Mill Road, culvert replacement. The Community Development Block Grant contract with Lehigh Asphalt Paving and Construction Co. of Tamaqua, increases $13,565.07 for a new total of $250,554.77.

• Acknowledged an agreement with Jim Thorpe borough for a permit to host the Heritage Festival in Mauch Chunk Lake Park. Jim Thorpe adopted a policy requiring certain information to obtain borough approval for hosting an event.
