Coaldale borough collects $117K in overdue bills

Faced with having water to their homes shut off, Coaldale residents with overdue sewer transmission fees have been paying up.

“It’s been pretty successful,” Councilwoman Kim Gavornik said of the recently passed resolution that allows the borough to cut off water service to those who are delinquent on their payments.

Gavornik noted that the borough has collected $116,923 over the past few weeks.

“So we collected half of what was outstanding, plus our current year,” she said.

The announcement was met with applause by council members at Tuesday’s meeting.

In July, it was noted that about 370 properties were behind on their sewer bills.

Council, in June, had adopted a resolution to shut off water to those who were six weeks or more behind on payments.

People had until July 29 to pay.

Gavornik said there are 71 accounts that are behind but do not have water service.

“We cannot shut their water off because they are already off,” she said.

Gavornik said she will ask solicitor Robert Yurchak what can be done to collect the money.

“Overall, it is a very big success,” she said.

The next round of shut-offs is Sept. 1. Those who have their water disconnected will have to pay an additional $50 fee to have the water services restored after they pay their sewer bills in full.
