Local soccer camp has international flair

Narrow Valley Sportsplex in Nesquehoning, the region’s newest multisport training and workout facility, hosted a soccer camp featuring professional players from Spain this week.

The soccer camp preceded the Sportsplex’s grand opening, which is set for noon to 4 p.m. today.

The complex, which has among its facilities, weightlifting equipment, volleyball courts, soccer areas and baseball batting cages, had scores of soccer players from as far away as Wilkes-Barre and Scranton at the camp, which concluded Friday. There also were local players.

During the camp, coaches from FC Espanol, a professional soccer team from Barcelona, gave instructions on the sport.

They said that two of the high school participants who attended have the potential to possibly eventually travel with professional European teams. They are Ella Cook, a senior from Jim Thorpe who attends the Carbon County Career and Training Institute, and Maria Smith, a senior at Crestwood High School, were lauded for their soccer skills.

At the conclusion of the weeklong camp, two semipro soccer clubs, PA Prime and FC Scranton, had matches against each other in a best-of-three contest.

Chris Geiser, Jim Thorpe High School’s head soccer coach, assisted with the camp. He said he was thrilled that two local athletes would receive such recognition from the professionals.

Among the coaches from FC Espanol was Bernat Domingo Mir, who personally conducted special training sessions with high school soccer players.

Male and female soccer players participated in the camp.

Geiser works with Right to Dream, a nonprofit organization which assists team players of various sports in college or professional opportunities.

“The whole purpose of the organization is to get young players looked at” by coaches at the college or pro level, he said. Geiser said besides Cook and Smith, six other soccer players — three boys and three girls — were also noticed by the professional coaches for their ability.

Cook said she attended the soccer camp because of Geiser. “I learned a lot from the different coaches,” she said.

Domingo Mir said he believes Cook or Smith would fit into the professional programs in Sweden or Spain.

Cook, 17, said she would enjoy playing professionally. She is a welding student at CCTI and will be getting on-hands experience through the school’s co-op program this year. She said that after high school, she wants to continue playing soccer as well as pursue a welding career.

Emily Reaman, marketing director for Narrow Valley Sportsplex, said one of the special events scheduled is a visit by Penn State University’s head basketball coach Mike Rhoades. He will be at the complex, located at the intersection of Routes 54 and 209 from 1 to 4 p.m. on Aug. 24.
