Schuylkill reassessment on track for 2026
Schuylkill County’s property tax reassessment is on track for 2026, the author of the effort said.
Tim Barr, of Vision Government Services and project director for the vendor chosen by the county to undertake the reassessment, told the county commissioners at their weekly meeting Wednesday morning that all the computer software necessary for the reassessment has been installed, and the reassessment process is moving forward.
“Approximately 94% of the residences in the county have been visited,” Barr said. “Data has been collected, and we could see the light at the end of the tunnel. The visits are somewhat invasive, but necessary to conform to the law. We have collected more than 50% of the data.”
Now, the reassessment team is interviewing the commercial property owners in the county.
“We are setting up face-to-face assessment interviews,” Barr said. “In the spring, we will send out change of assessment notices. In the spring, we will also have public meetings in the county’s 12 school districts.”
When the reassessment is complete in 2026, Barr said it will be “revenue neutral” meaning municipalities, the county and school districts will have to reduce millage to bring in approximately the same amount of tax money that is coming in now — just with lower millage.
“The new millage will produce the same exact revenue,” Barr said. “We are doing a monthly report on the reassessment on the county’s website. There is a tab on the county’s website for the reassessment.”
After the meeting, Barr said an advisory committee made up of various members of the community is being formed to get input on the reassessment process.
“The committee is made up of lawyers, residents, businesspersons, seniors, and other members of the community,” Barr said.
