Panther board hires teacher, retains solicitor

The Panther Valley School District lost two elementary teachers and the school board acted on hiring one Wednesday night in routine business.

Submitting resignations were Amand Kusko, third grade teacher, and Abbie Neff, second grade teacher.

The board hired Briana Marchese as a third grade teacher for the coming school year at a rate of $45,003, per the union contract.

In other business, the board:

• Approved three fall courses at Wilkes University for Theresa Williams. All are three-credit courses at cost of $516 a credit.

• Reappointed Robert Yurchak as school district solicitor at retainer fee of $8,500 and an hourly rate of $120 for work outside the meetings.

• Approved Terri Kokinda as a fill-in fall worker at a cost of $30 an event.

• Tabled spring athletic coaches.

• Approved the Panther Valley Sports Medicine Emergency Action Plan for 2024-25.

• Approved booster clubs for track and field, wrestling, football, girls basketball, softball.

• Approved paving projects not to exceed $40,000. The road behind the high school will be regraded and repaved, and a section of the parking lot near the administration offices will be milled and repaved.

• Approved writs of execution for 10 properties. Seven are in Lansford, two in Summit Hill and one in Nesquehoning.

• Award the contract for the purchase of a box truck to Bonner Chevrolet, which bid $87,576. The purchase will come out of cafeteria funds, and the truck will be used for the summer food program.

• Approved the financing proposal from First National Bank for the purchase of a general obligation note, authorized the advertisement of a legal notice and authorized the municipal adviser, solicitor and bond counsel to undertake action necessary for the debt resolution and issuance of the note. The district is taking a loan at 4.5% and investing the funds at 5% to 5.5% to earn money for capital projects.

• Approved opening a bank accounts titled Cafeteria Funds and General Fund with FNB Bank, and another account for borrowing proceeds to be held with FNB Bank before use.

• Approved Act 80 days for the 2024-25 as follows: Oct, 14, March 12 and May 2.

• Approved mentors for new teachers.

• Approved the second reading of a policy on bullying/cyberbullying, and the first reading on policies regarding, trauma informed approach, student discipline, weapons, terroristic threats, public records, school calendar, emergency preparedness, relations with law enforcement, school security personnel, child abuse, public attendance at school events, and municipal government relations.

• Approved the quarterly work assignment as of June 2024.

• Approved the teacher assignment list as presented for 2024-25.

• Approved the paraprofessional assignment list for 2024-25.

• Heard from Amanda Lehman, whose daughter Hydee, would like to continue in the high school band following her enrollment in the Pennsylvania Public Cyber Charter School. Principal Patricia Ebbert said that she can 100% continue to play in the band, as CCA does not offer that for students.
