Panther wrestling champ honored
National wrestling champion Brenda Banks received a standing ovation as she accepted a Senate citation for her accomplishment from state Sen. David Argall during Panther Valley School Board’s meeting Wednesday night.
The rising Panther Valley High School junior won first place during the 2023-24 U.S. Marine Corps Junior National 16U Wrestling Competition in 235-pound weight class in Fargo, North Dakota, this past weekend.
Argall along with board members and all those attending the meeting applauded her accomplishment in only her second year wrestling.
“She has established herself as one of the most promising upper-weight wrestlers in the entire nation,” Argall said in congratulating her.
The Senate recognition commends Banks for “her commitment to personal and athletic success along with the betterment of her school and community.”
Her principal, Patricia Ebbert, who was in contact with Banks’ family and providing updates on the school’s social media during the national competition, also had a gift for her.
“This is a simple gift from myself and the students at Panther Valley,” Ebbert said to her. “I know talking to your mom throughout the tournament, one of the things that she said you wanted was to bring this back to Panther Valley.
“So, we wanted to make sure that we got you something so that you will never forget your experiences out there,” she said, as she handed her a celebratory gift bag.
Banks beamed as she pulled out a black and gold T-shirt with the words, “National Champion,” on the front, and “Banks,” on the back, and held up for all to see, and everyone in the room applauded again.
School Board President Daniel Matika asked the Banks if she wanted to share anything about her experience at nationals.
Banks, not one for the spotlight, said it was difficult and tiring, but she had a lot of fun and met a lot of nice people.
“Thank you so much,” she told board and school community who supported her on the journey.
Board members thanked her, recognizing her accomplishment.
“You’re incredible,” Matika said in a crush of voices.
Board member Renee DeMelfi also offered heartfelt congratulations to Banks.
“I know you don’t like the attention, but you’re a phenomenal person. You’re a champion. Keep staying humble and thank you. Thank you for bringing the attention to Panther Valley and keep doing what you’re doing.
“You’re a champion, honey,” she said.
Banks’ mother, Glynnis, said that she is amazed by the support from the community, as another mother told her that her daughter’s school didn’t even know she was competing.
“We came from a big city. We didn’t have that kind of support with sports,” she said. “I just want to say thank you to everybody who has given us such a warm welcome and support.”
