Coaldale police said that a Lansford man took a bag of candy from a borough convenience store and began eating it without paying for it.
When a clerk asked John Shubeck Jr., 23, to pay for the candy, Coaldale police said Shubeck lifted up his shirt to show a gun and then fled.
Police said the incident started at 6:45 p.m. July 7 when Shubeck took a bag of Werner brand Watermelon Sour Belts candy valued at $2.79 and ate it without paying for it.
According to police, after Shubeck flashed the gun he left the store and went through a yard marked with “No Trespassing” signs. A witness who asked Shubeck if he had just walked through the yard said that Shubeck had what appeared to be a black gun in his hand.
Police said Shubeck removed his hat in Coaldale, and kept walking. The hat, along with what he was wearing, matches video of the incident caught by surveillance cameras in the store, police said.
Police charged Shubeck with robbery-threaten immediate serious injury, and retail theft. Bail was set at $25,000 unsecured.
