A Walnutport official wants to shield one of the borough’s newer recreational activities from possible damage.
Councilman David Stankovic said at Thursday’s borough council’s meeting that the borough has an issue with its pickleball court.
Stankovic said the issue has to do with ABC Early Learning day care at 417 Lincoln Ave. The day care is behind borough hall.
“They should not let the kids go out and play there,” Stankovic said. “All the kids hang on the net.”
Stankovic then suggested that the borough give a letter to the day care.
Mike Wentz, Public Works director, said he’s spoken to the day care several times.
“The kids were running and jumping right on the net, and I told them stay off it,” Wentz said. “They’re ruining the net.”
Stankovic then suggested putting a sign up that states tennis players and pickleball players only.
Councilwoman Jen Wentz agreed that perhaps a letter should be drafted, and that the borough should notify them that they want them off there.
In July 2023, Mike Wentz announced that pickleball was alive and well.
That came after council in June of 2023 approved a quote of $2,470 from S & G Asphalt Service, Slatington, to line its pickleball and basketball courts.
Of that, $1,560 was to line the pickleball court, and the $910 to line the basketball court.
Pickleball is a combination of tennis, table tennis, and badminton. The game is played on a court with a net. The surface is smaller than a tennis court.
