Carbon approves changes for courthouse work

Carbon County commissioners approved several change orders for the $5 million courthouse renovation project amid routine business last week.

Five change orders were to the contract with JBM Mechanical Inc. of Nazareth, which reduced the more than $2 million contract by $13,266.95.

Another three change orders were to the contract with G.R. Noto Electrical Construction of Clarks Summit. The contract remains the same at $1.07 million.

The courthouse, which was built in 1893, shut down for business on July 5 to allow for an electric changeover in the historic structure.

The project remains on budget, Commissioner Chair Michael Sofranko reported.

“That’s the goal,” Commissioner Rocky Ahner said. “So, we’re heading in the right direction.”

Grants

Commissioners also ratified a Local Share Account agreement with the Commonwealth Financing Agency for $68,423 in funding for equipment associated with propane training props for the firefighter training project at the county Emergency Operations and Training Center. The effective date is May 21, 2024, through June 30, 2027.

The board ratified a LSA grant agreement with CFA for $73,581 in funding on behalf of the Lehighton American Legion Post 314 for construction project at the post. The term runs from May 21, 2024, to June 30, 2027.
