Slatington council appoints new board member
Slatington borough council appointed its newest board member during its monthly meeting on Monday.
William Schippers will fill the vacancy created by the passing of Walter Niedermeyer. Schippers will be sworn in at 6:30 p.m. on July 15.
In other matters, Mayor Jeralyn Schoch announced that National Night Out will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Aug. 6 in the parking lot at Bulldog Stadium.
Schoch is looking for groups from the community to set up tables from their organizations.

Council also acted on the following items:
• Approved to have Alarm Company, SSI install a new fire alarm system in the Slatington Fire Station, with COVID-19 LFRF funds. The cost is $13,350.
• Approved electricity responsibilities for the Walnut Street Bridge project and the Walnut Street traffic signal submission.
• Approved to have solicitor Lisa Young change an ordinance concerning height restriction for vehicles on West Center Avenue. (Proposed maximum height is 9-foot)
• Approved $16,000 COVID-19 LFRF money for paving Chestnut Alley from Gibson Paving Services LLC.
• Approved $21,000 for paving Oakhurst Drive.
• Authorized the advertisement of public hearing concerning official map, zoning map, and zoning ordinance changes.
• Approved Northern Lehigh Swimming Pool Association to hold a fundraiser event featuring Vince’s Cheesesteak Truck from 1:30 to 7 p.m. on July 17.
• Approved St. Luke’s for their 14th Annual Bike Ride on June 7, 2025.
• Appointed Crystal Fink to fill an open seat on the Slatington Borough Authority. Term expires Jan. 1.
• Approved to advertise for bids to replace Maple Spring Drive waterline.
• Police Chief Greg Winokur plans to hire another new officer in the next two months.
• The police department received $1,400 from the Slatington Rotary Club to upgrade the officers’ equipment.
• Fire Chief Robert Repp reported that the Slatington Fire Department will be having two CPR classes in one evening at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 5 at the Fire Station, 524 W. Church St. All ages welcome. Hands-only classes.
• Council discussed a public memorial for the late Walter Niedermeyer. It will go to committee for further discussion.
• Denied a request from Caring Hearts for a banner across Main Street.
• Boy Scout Adrian Hassold and his father, Andy, attended the Slatington borough council meeting to take notes for Adrian’s Communication Badge. Adrian belongs to Troop #62 out of Berlinsville.
• Laurie Moyer, Lehigh County grants management specialized, sent a notice concerning 2024 Community Development Block Grant awards. The county is supporting the following projects: Street reconstruction on Willow Street from Dowell to North streets, $89,605; street reconstruction on Cherry Street from Race Street to Yenser Alley, $96,465; street reconstruction on Hill Street from East Church to E. Washington streets, $94,165.
