Lansford Alive, PMVB buy trash cans

Lansford Alive and the Pocono Mountain Visitors Bureau will be buying trash receptacles for Lansford’s downtown business district and parks.

Lansford Alive placed litter barrels in the borough’s business district some 20 years ago and painted and replaced them over the years since.

The borough removed the aging cans because people were loading the open-top cans with household garbage and other items, such as dog waste and diapers.

Borough council decided to move toward different trash cans, which can be mounted to the sidewalk and also have smaller openings and lids to prevent abuse, and considered a grant for the purchase.

Lansford Alive questioned why the cans were removed, and why no one told its leadership that there was a problem. The organization then offered to help fund trash cans, asking that the organization’s name be placed on them.

The borough also had an offer from another organization to purchase all 24 cans — at no cost to the borough.

That offer came from the Pocono Mountain Visitors Bureau. Lansford Alive asked the borough if they could still be involved, as the trash barrels had been one of the organization’s first service projects.

Councilwoman Gwyneth Collevechio said last week that both organizations will be involved in purchasing the new trash cans.

Lansford Alive offered to purchase 12 cans, which will be placed in the business district, and the visitors’ bureau offered to buy 24 cans, which will be used in the borough’s parks, she said.

In addition to Ashton, Kennedy and East End parks, the borough may also place some cans along the island by the former St. Mike’s church on Abbott Street, Collevechio said.

Council President Bruce Markovich said they would likely have extra cans to place in reserve or for future use.
