The South Ward Playground in Tamaqua is hoping to add a swing for children with disabilities to enjoy.
“We actually have two children who come to our park that are in wheelchairs and they just sit there and watch the other kids play,” explained Michelle Culkins, a member of the South Ward Playground Association.
Culkins attended the recent Tamaqua Borough Council meeting, hoping the borough might be able to help with the equipment.
“We really don’t have anything in this town for kids who are handicapped,” Culkins said.
She shared information about a seat with a harness that could be used to hold a disabled child. It doesn’t include a base and frame.
Asked if it could be mounted on an existing swing set, Culkins said the playground only has two “regular” swings, and two baby swings.
She noted that there is an accessible area in the rear of the park, and suggested that the swing be placed there.
Borough Manager Kevin Steigerwalt said he would look into the matter.
The playground will soon receive a new fence through assistance from a Community Development Block Grant.
Culkins asked when the work would begin since the playground has been busy.
“We have a bunch of programs going on,” she said. “Churches are coming from all over. We have churches from Virginia coming.”
The summer lunch program is also underway, she said.
Steigerwalt invited playground officials to the preconstruction meeting, which will be held at the end of the month.
