Spotlight: A hill to climb
Some 80 cars competed to see who could spin the fastest time on the Miracle Minute Mile of the Weatherly Hillclimb.
Hundreds of spectators watched the 63rd annual spring event this past weekend. Drivers from Weatherly and as far away as West Virginia and North and South Carolina competed.
First-time driver Justin Reed recorded the best time over the two days of racing on the five hairpin turns of the Hill climb, 49.701 seconds. Awards were made in several different car classifications.
Longtime driver Steve Lewis, also known as Mr. Evil, was inducted into the Weatherly Hillclimb Hill of Fame.
Lewis passed away over the winter. His wife, Nancy, was at the race to help honor her husband.
Previous inductees into the Hill of Fame, which was established in 2012, are: Weatherly Rotary Club; Dr. Charles Potter, M.D.; Bernie Zeleznock and Jimmy Michael, 2012; Lynn DeHart, Joe Foering, and Ammon “Bumper” Hettler, 2013; Rev. Donald J. Stump Sr., and Joe and Dee Wilkie, 2014; Dan and Carol Lipperini, and Eugene “Gene” Kunkel, 2015; John Pitman, and John and Gail Knorr, 2016; Mike Leib and Susan Salzburg, 2017; the Corazza family and Nelson Kase, 2018; Harold Pudliner and John Tumolo, 2019; Robert “Bob” and Norma Oswald, Randy “Hopper” and Debbie Hinkle, 2021; Matt Rowe and Jen DeHart, and Jimmy Baran, 2022; Citizens Fire Co. #1 Weatherly and Gordon Wise, 2023.
Those in attendance also enjoyed homemade food under the Hill climb pavilion from the Weatherly High School, Classes of 2015 and 2016, the Weatherly Area Community Library, the Weatherly Babe Ruth Baseball Team, Cub Scout Pack 007, the Centenary United Methodist Church, and the White Haven Boy Scouts.
The fall event of the Weatherly Hillclimb will be held the weekend of Sept. 14-15.
The Citizens Fire Co. #1 of Weatherly, the L & L Fire Co. and the White Haven Ambulance provided emergency services during the entire event.
