Carbon offices closed July 5 for electrical changeover

Several Carbon County offices will be closed a day in July to allow for work on an electrical changeover to take place in the courthouse.

On Thursday, the board of commissioners approved an advertisement for the closure of non-essential county offices on July 5 due to the courthouse renovation project.

The closure will allow workers to shut down the power for a changeover in the courthouse.

Commissioners’ Chairman Michael Sofranko said that while it is worded for “non-essential” county offices, it doesn’t mean that the county employees are not essential. It’s just that there are some employees that will still be needed on that day, including parking attendants, Mauch Chunk Lake Park employees, prison staff and 911 dispatchers.

“I don’t want anybody think that you’re not essential, because every county employee plays an essential role,” Sofranko said. “... It was just the safest way to word it with unions and employees.”

Carbon County has been working on the courthouse renovation project since last November and has been making several improvements.

Last week, the board said that the multimillion dollar project remains on schedule.
