Coaldale man charged in Schuylkill case

A Coaldale man is facing multiple charges following a tense incident in which he threatened to kill himself, forced a victim inside his vehicle, led police on a chase and ended in a crash in Pine Grove Township.

State police at the Schuylkill Haven barracks said it happened at 2:41 p.m. May 29, resulting in the arrest of Angel Rivera, 49.

He is charged with kidnapping, unlawful restraint, recklessly endangering another person, theft of movable property/motor vehicle and fleeing or attempting to elude police.

Police said they responded at the above time to the area of the McDonald’s restaurant at 427 Suedberg Road, Pine Grove Township, for an involuntary commitment involving a suicidal man in possession of a pistol.

They said the man was identified as Rivera, who, prior to police’s arrival, made a victim enter his vehicle. They said the victim was able to communicate to a friend via text messaging that Rivera forced the person into his truck.

The victim said Rivera made concerning statements that he would be better off dead, that he has a 9-mm pistol and that he is going to “do suicide by cop.”

Police said the victim convinced Rivera to be dropped off at the Pilot gas station on Suedberg Road. While at the station, police said troopers observed the vehicle and attempted to make a traffic stop, but Rivera fled the scene at a high rate of speed.

Police said a pursuit ensued during which time Rivera committed numerous traffic violations, including passing a school bus that had its lights activated. Police said a precision immobilization technique maneuver was attempted, causing both Rivera and the trooper to come to a stop. Police said Rivera put the vehicle in reverse and again fled the scene. They said spike strips were successfully deployed, causing the vehicle Rivera was driving to sustain a flat tire. They said he traveled back to McDonald’s, exited the vehicle, and stole the victim’s vehicle, with police continuing the pursuit.

It ended when Rivera crashed in the area of Oak Grove and Trumbo roads in Pine Grove Township. Police said he exited the vehicle while holding a pistol in his hand, pointing it at his head, mouth and chest and yelling to troopers on scene to kill him. Troopers on scene negotiated his surrender and placed him into custody.

In their report, police listed a 21-year-old woman from Lebanon as a victim in the incident.
