Lansford considers next step for collapsing building

Lansford officials are deciding what to do with another building that is collapsing.

The second floor of the former Koch’s Appliance building collapsed into the first floor in recent days.

The building at 118 W. Ridge St. may need to be torn due to an outer wall buckling, said Bruce Markovich, council president, who viewed the building along with state Sen. David Argall and Rep. Doyle Heffley last Thursday.

The local legislators also toured the Panther Valley Community Center in the former English Congregational Church on West Ridge Street and view where work needs to be done on Brimble’s Wall, both are projects that received state grant funding.

The borough’s engineer inspected the former Koch Building, and believed the front of the building would not fall onto Ridge Street, but the side of the building could collapse into an empty lot adjacent to the building. The lot is fenced in and has a sign reading, “Keep Out,” on it.

Markovich said the borough may need to do an emergency tear down of the building.
