Tamaqua awards contract for playground upgrades

The Tamaqua Borough Council awarded a contract to H&P Construction Inc. for improvements to the North and Middle Ward Playground and South Ward Playground.

The cost for the repairs is $99,799.11, and includes new fencing for both playgrounds, along with concrete and asphalt work at the North and Middle Ward.

“The fence that is at the South Ward now is kind of beat up, and it will be replaced with a new chain link fence,” borough manager Kevin Steigerwalt explained previously.

The North and Middle Ward will get a more decorative fence, since it is visible from the heavily traveled Route 309, he noted. However, there will be a delay in replacing that fence, because of a miscommunication with the vendor.

Plans are also to fix a handicapped accessible ramp at the main entrance to the North and Middle Ward park at Washington and Vine streets. A more gentle slope will be created, and an ADA-accessible path will be added.

In addition, an area in front of the concession stand will be paved.

Funds for the improvements at both playgrounds will come from a Community Development Block Grant. The North and Middle Ward will also be aided by funding from the Morgan Foundation, Steigerwalt noted previously.

Also during this week’s meeting, council voted to accept a $60,000 grant from the Morgan Foundation for pool operation and maintenance expenses. The grant is given annually.

Swim season begins Saturday at the borough pool at Bungalow Park. Steigerwalt said borough workers continue to ready the pool for opening day.

Also, council approved a lease agreement with Debra Sebelin for the pool concession stand.
