Butterfly sanctuary hosts Family Promise benefit

The Bear Mountain Butterfly Sanctuary will host a Welcome the Butterflies Back Event on Saturday and Sunday as a benefit for Family Promise of Carbon County.

All the regular butterflies, Axolotl, turtles, fish, frogs and lizards will be present, plus fun and special crafts, food, plant sales, Painted Lady butterfly hatching kits, interactive programs, and live “guests” from the Caron County Environmental Center.

Rain or shine, this will be a fun weekend.

Everyone is welcome; no reservations required.

The Sanctuary also will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Memorial Day.

Leta Thompson, local photographer, has captured many close-up photos of butterflies over time and has found inspirational quotations that enhance the enjoyment of each butterfly photo. Her final creation is her book “Butterflies Are Free,” a hardcover book that has 24 captivating photos and wise sayings that are truly inspirational for people of all ages.

Stop by to visit with Thompson and purchase a signed copy of her book. Part of the proceeds will be donated to Family Promise. She will be at the Butterfly Sanctuary from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, and again on June 8.

Public walk-in hours start at 11 a.m. June 8.

The sanctuary is located at 18 Church Road, Jim Thorpe.
