Man charged with trying to smuggle contraband into jail

A Stroudsburg man who attempted to smuggle drugs into the Monroe County Correctional Institute, Snydersville, is facing multiple charges for the unsuccessful attempt.

The Monroe County District Attorney’s Office said Kenneth M. Macelak, 39, is facing charges of possession of a controlled substance, contraband, by an inmate, contraband prohibited, alcohol and drugs, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. The charges were filed by Detective Derek Marshall of the DA’s office after the office was contacted by Deputy Warden Joseph McCoy on May 7 about the incident that happened on May 2.

Police said Macelak was brought into the prison on unrelated charges on the above date and during the intake process was found to be in possession of a plastic bag filled with crystal-like substance that he attempted to conceal in his buttocks.

They said when a correctional officer and Macelak entered a bathroom for purposes of Macelak changing into prison attire, the man was adamant he did not want to take his underwear off. After a brief confrontation, the correctional officer discovered the attempt to conceal the drugs and confiscated a baggie that contained the drugs that was later tested and confirmed to be methamphetamine, police said.
