Carbon County Commissioners
The Carbon County Commissioners acted on or discussed the following items during their meeting last week.
• Ratified a grant application to the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency for the Carbon County Intermediate Punishment Program. The grant funding request in the amount of $89,998 will fund a partial salary for one adult probation officer, electronic monitoring equipment and supplies and treatment services.
• Ratified an amendment to the Appalachian Regional Commission project grant for the broadband feasibility study. The amendment extends the grant period to Sept. 30 in order to complete the final closeout documents.
• Ratified a proposal from Storage Solutions of Snyders LLC of Germansville, for a storage shed for personal protective equipment supplies at the Carbon County Correctional Facility. The cost is $17,250 that will be funded by the prison’s COVID Relief grant.
• Approved a change order with the contract with Northeast Industrial Services of Shamokin for the demolition of 135-139 N. First St., Lehighton. The contract increased $63,580, bringing the total to $250,015. The amendment was due to additional work to ensure the stability of the neighboring building following the demolition.
• Commissioner Wayne Nothstein announced that there is still time to register for the upcoming elected officials workshop at the Carbon County Emergency Operations Training Center.
• Commissioners’ Chairman Michael Sofranko announced that six county employees recently graduated from the NACo High Performance Leadership Academy. The academy is a 12-week online program designed to empower county government officials with results-oriented leadership skills. Those who graduated from the program are Cecilia Toolsee, Derek George, Pamela Pauchspies, Reneé Roberts, Samantha Ciallella and Tyra Boni.
• Sofranko also stressed that a dumpster at the former Tent City site is not open for public use and is being monitored. The county is working to clean up the site now that the majority of the tenants have found other places to live.
