Trash costs jump in Coaldale

Coaldale residents will be digging deeper into their pockets to pay their next trash collection bills.

Residents will be charged $114 per quarter for sanitation services, Councilwoman Kim Gavornik said at Tuesday’s council meeting.

Previously, they had paid $77 per quarter.

Gavornik said residents will have 60 days to pay their bills before a $11.40 late fee charge is added.

The next billing cycle begins on July 1, when the borough’s current sanitation contract expires.

In April, the borough awarded a bid for sanitation services to Tamaqua Transfer and Recycling of Tamaqua. It was the only bid received.

Council voted to enter into a four-year contract with Tamaqua Transfer for $1.69 million. It was the least expensive option presented.

Council President Claire Remington said sanitation service costs are increasing almost everywhere.

“It’s not just us. It is going to be other municipalities,” she said. “Nobody is going to get a garbage bill for less. It is what it is.”

In an unrelated matter, council hired Beth Martinico as borough secretary.

Martinico had served in the role a several years ago, and returned to help in recent months.

“By the way, you are doing a great job,” Remington said after she was hired.

Council will also advertise for part-time borough police officers and part-time seasonal help.

Councilwoman Yvonne Stoffey noted that the Coaldale Community Yard Sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 18 and 19. Those who want to have their addresses listed on a borough Facebook post announcing the event should call borough hall.

She also said that the borough’s spring cleanup will be held May 25. Residents should have their items outside their homes on May 24.
