Lehighton council discusses shuttle service

The concept of a shuttle service that would spread tourism throughout Carbon County was discussed at last week’s Lehighton Borough Council meeting.

Councilwoman Autumn Abelovsky said that with the tourism industry booming in Jim Thorpe, Lehighton could possibly look to get a piece of the action.

Abelovsky said LANTA is willing to provide them with shuttle service at a minimal fee.

She said businesses in downtown Lehighton would be open to the concept, and added it would in an attempt to get tourists to come to the borough.

Borough Manager Dane DeWire said other boroughs in the county were interested in Lehighton’s proposal.

After the meeting, DeWire said that Jim Thorpe is looking for ways to get parking and foot traffic out of their borough during the tourism season.

In a meeting with the Jim Thorpe Borough Manager Maureen Sterner, DeWire said he had suggested a shuttle service between the boroughs which had been an item of discussion with the merchants association, historical alliance, and downtown initiative groups already in Lehighton.

“The intent would be to take some of the burden off of Jim Thorpe’s streets after the chaotic events of last fall, and spread that tourism throughout the county,” he said. “Specifically, on weekends that other municipalities are holding larger events.”

DeWire noted the concept is still in the planning stages at this point.
