Nesquehoning Borough Council

Nesquehoning Borough Council discussed or acted upon the following items during its monthly meeting recently.

• Approved a request to waive the fees for the Nesquehoning VFW Post 8008 land development plan and building permit for the construction of a pavilion at its proposed memorial grove.

• Adopted the police contract after negotiations were approved by the Fraternal Order of Police.

• Approved updating the handicapped parking ordinance.

• Approved a portion of Center Street in front of the VFW to be closed for a cornhole fundraiser on May 11 and a children’s bike rodeo on June 2.

• Councilwoman Lois Kuba announced the three fire departments in the borough received $1,836 each from the boot drive that was held.

• Council reported that a meeting with representatives from Reading Blue Mountain and Northern Railroad was productive regarding several issues. Members were happy with the increased communication with the railroad.

• Councilman Bruce Nalesnik announced that the street project bids will be awarded May 22.

• Approved the purchase of a drone at a cost of $600. Council agreed that while it is being purchased by the sewer department, any borough department, including fire companies and police will have access to it.

• Reported that electronics recycling will take place from 2-5 p.m. or until the truck is full on May 21. More information is available on the borough website.

• Council discussed the two homes that were destroyed by a fire in early April and stressed the need for an emergency tear down. It was noted the homeowners did not have insurance.

• There are four vacancies on the borough recreation committee. Letters of interest can be sent to the borough.
