Missing hiker found dead on Blue Mountain

A 62-year-old New Jersey man who went missing while hiking on the Blue Mountain over the weekend was found dead on Sunday.

Lehigh Township Fire Commissioner Rick Hildebrand said about midnight Sunday morning, they got a call from Lehighton State Police.

“They found a vehicle attached to the person that was reported missing in the state game land parking lot in Lehigh Township,” Hildebrand said. “They called for assistance in trying to locate this male.”

Hildebrand said crews from Lehigh Township and Aquashicola fire departments responded and began searching.

He said a command post was set up at the parking lots on the Blue Mountain Resort just off Blue Mountain Drive.

Hildebrand added that drone teams were added for thermal imaging cameras from the air.

“But with poor weather at the time, however, they were able to make some quick searches of the area with no success,” he said. “The weather deteriorated, and we were no longer able to use the drones.”

Hildebrand said search and rescue teams with K9s were called in.

He said dogs with special capabilities for scent tracking and air scent were used to assist in searching.

Hildebrand said that about 3 p.m. the man was located on the Lehigh Township southern exposure of the Blue Mountain, just off the Appalachian Trail in the area of the ski area.

He said the Northampton County Coroner’s Office was contacted.
