Letter to the editor: The Plight of the Pedestrian Bridge

Hello, My name is William Miller, the Jim Thorpe resident that was trying to help solve the traffic issue that invade our town every Spring, Summer and Fall (at no expense to the taxpayers). The citizens that liver nearby cannot get near their own downtown, because of the revitalization and constant advertisement, our town created a monster, that you can no longer control!

Trains arriving daily (now three) trains with the capacity of delivering up to (eight hundred) passengers per train. “Do the Math.” The pedestrian bridge could handle that traffic efficiently!

Back in November of 2023, I had the pleasure of talking to Mayor Mike. I remember Mayor Mike saying that he wanted to solve the traffic issues that plague our town, he even suggested escalators on both sides of the bridge (now I thought that was a little over the top, but I said OK let’s run with it!).

Now three months passed since Mayor Mike and I spoke. I went to one of the weekly county commissioners meeting in early February 2024, and now Commissioner Mike (same Mike), had a total change of heart. Stating to me that it is not in the budget, it would look gaudy, and also that the town might lose its appeal, (like that big yellow bike isn’t gaudy), give me a break! At least the bridge would be functional. I wonder who got in Commissioners Mike ear? Mayor Mike had it right!

At this point in time, I have no one to help me give this project some traction. Also, (rumor has it) that Flagstaff is contemplating plans to install a tram to bring even more visitors to our town. I hope you’re ready for the ensuing mayhem as summer arrives!

Thank you for your time!

William L. Miller
