State police to conduct checkpoints

State police at the Schuylkill Haven barracks reported they plan to conduct sobriety checkpoints on Schuylkill County roads during various days in May.

Police said during the checkpoints, troopers will systematically stop vehicles at selected locations to briefly observe drivers for articulable facts and/or behaviors normally associated with alcohol- or drug-impaired drivers.

Police said the goal of the checkpoints is to reduce the number of alcohol- and drug-related fatal and serious crashes and to reduce the number of drivers operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and/or a controlled substance in Pennsylvania.

Police said they are committed to maintaining a safe environment for the motoring public and believe the checkpoints will help achieve this goal.

They said results of increased patrols and checkpoints will be released after the period concludes.
