Carbon County Commissioners

The Carbon County Commissioners acted on or discussed the following items during their weekly meeting on Thursday.

• Approved a four-year plan of the Carbon County Area Agency on Aging from Oct. 1, 2024, through Sept. 30, 2028, that was developed to facilitate long range needs and is required to ensure federal funding.

• Approved two proposals with Vistacom of Allentown for the purchase of PolyX30 video systems for the correctional facility and district attorney’s office. The cost for the purchase at the correctional facility is $18,610.06, while the purchase in the district attorney’s office is $9,130.86. Both purchases are funded through the correctional facility’s COVID relief grant.

• Approved a proposal with Vistacom to purchase a Poly Cart System for the public defender’s office at a total cost of $21,333.54. The purchase is funded through the correctional facility’s COVID relief grant.

• Approved an agreement between the Pennsylvania Department of Aging and Carbon County Area Agency on Aging to administer a Shared Housing and Resource Exchange program to address the increasing need for affordable housing options for seniors and seniors with disabilities. The budget for the SHARE program through Carbon County totals $87,000.

• Commissioners Rocky Ahner and Michael Sofranko will be attending a seminar on May 1 on the opioid settlement money that counties have been receiving. The seminar is to look at how counties are utilizing the money and provide some insight on how the money can be used.

• Sofranko announced that sidewalk work was being completed in front of the old train station and Josiah White Park to alleviate any walking hazards that had been identified by the county safety committee. The work is covered through a safety grant.

Personnel

• Hire: Narayana N. Norwood of Summit Hill, parking attendant, effective May 4.

• Change of status: Jeffery G. Velander of Brodheadsville, from full-time assistant public defender to full-time first assistant public defender, effective April 29.

• Court appointment: Chelsey J. Barker of Lehighton, adult probation specialist, effective June 3.

• District attorney change of status: from full-time first assistant public defender to full-time assistant district attorney 2, effective April 22.

• Sheriff resignations: Willie J. Streisel Jr. of Barnesville, deputy sheriff, effective April 22; and Tara L. Trainer of Lehighton, administrative assistant, effective May 26.
