Desire for natural healing leads to herbal career

If you’re looking for natural ways to heal, check out “Mad Mama.”

Megan Spiker, born and raised in Blakeslee, launched “Mad Mama Herbalworks” in 2020.

Spiker began learning about healing through nature and herbs as a teenager while battling depression and anxiety. With many side effects from the medication she started to look into natural healing. Her father was a native Susquehannan and 3rd generation Pocono native.

Spiker began making natural products for herself and her family. She completed a course with an herbalist to continue learning about the uses of native plants.

During COVID, the products became more popular as people were looking for natural solutions. The product line includes medicinal tinctures and liquid herbal extract for herbal supplements and teas.

While living briefly in California and having extremely sensitive skin while pregnant, Spiker began looking for creams that had no chemical products.

This led to her making natural skin care products with no fragrance and no chemicals.

Her body butter is infused with calendula, a small yellow native plant, and marshmallow root. She noted that many people have commented about being able to use this on their babies or the elderly as well.

Spiker said she hopes to “Create a community space for people to be aware and preserve and understand the land.”

Her goal is to “pass that knowledge to the next generation, learning about the abundance of natural resources in our area.“

Spiker started community walks in 2023 to help people identify plants that they can eat or will help as a natural resource.

Leading home school groups enabled the children to be involved and begin to care for their environment.

Spiker noted that she sees herself as a “land stewart with a passion for plant life here” and hopes to pass this knowledge down through generations.

She is available to do these walks in the greater Pocono area.
