Cornhole tournament, basket raffle Saturday

In the mood for a friendly game of cornhole?

Feeling lucky enough to enter your name in a basket raffle?

Have a sweet tooth with a yearning for baked goods?

If the answer to any of the above is in the affirmative, then a fundraiser hosted by a local organization could be just the fix.

The Bowmanstown Palmerton Baseball and Softball Association will hold a cornhole tournament, basket raffle, and bake sale at noon Saturday at Stoney Ridge P.A.R.C. in Lower Towamensing Township.

Lynsi Sheckler, who serves as secretary of the Association, explained the purpose of the event.

“The league is in desperate need of some TLC on our fields, and the majority of money raised at this event will be utilized to purchase dirt, grass seed, etc. in order to ensure our players are on the safest fields possible,” Sheckler said. We are also in desperate need of a tractor that actually works.

“We are hoping to utilize the funds raised for that, too. Unfortunately our tractor overheats and has a lot of issues requiring frequent repair. We are just not in a position to buy a new one with what the club’s funds are currently at.”

Sheckler signaled out why this particular event was chosen.

“We felt that this could incorporate a large diverse group and really maximize the funds that we could bring in,” she said. “One of our assistant coaches has been doing cornhole tournaments for sports leagues so he volunteered to help us run it.”

Sheckler said “Bowmanstown Baseball” has been around since the 1940s, but changed the name to add in Palmerton in 2000.

“We currently have spring and fall baseball and softball seasons,” she said. “For the spring season, we have six baseball teams ranging from T-ball to knee-hi, and one softball team.”

Sheckler said the cost for the event is $25 a person, or $50 per team to enter into a cornhole tournament which has a cash prize.

She said to attend the basket raffle and bake sale is free and open to the public.
