Carbon woman charged with harboring fugitive

A Lower Towamensing Township woman has been charged with harboring a fugitive at her home in Lower Towamensing Township.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by Trooper Carl Nerthling of the Pennsylvania State Police - Stroudsburg barracks in the case against Amanda Gostonyi:

On March 19, Nerthling investigated reports of endangering welfare of children involving a firearm and other gun violation.

These violations were reported against a 16-year-old by his mother, Gostonyi, 48, and her current boyfriend, Vincent Napolitano, 37, in the 100 block of Craig Street.

The boy said Napolitano aimed a handgun at him. Napolitano has a criminal history and is not allowed to have a gun. It was learned Gostonyi bought the gun in her name.

On Feb. 26, the Lackawanna County Sheriff’s Office obtained a warrant for the arrest of Napolitano for felony violations. Several attempts to apprehend Napolitano resulted in him fleeing and eluding apprehension, including one incident on March 23.

Gostonyi was informed of Napolitano’s warrant, but phone records indicated she harbored him in her home.

On April 1, Napolitano was apprehended in Stroudsburg and remanded to the Monroe County Correctional Facility. On April 5, a search warrant was served upon the residence on Craig Street. Plastic containers, waxine baggies, an electronic scale, and used syringe containing suspected drug residue were seized from the residence.

Gostonyi was placed into custody and transported to PSP Lehighton barracks. She said the gun was stolen from her vehicle in Walnutport, but then said the gun was taken from her residence but she had not made a report of the stolen gun to police.

Gostonyi acknowledged that on Aug. 11, she traveled to Dunkleberger’s with Napolitano to purchase a firearm for her protection and bought the gun. She said she typically stored in a bedside stand. Napolitano had easy access to the gun, and that in several instances Napolitano carried the gun throughout the residence as he investigated noises in the night.

Gostonyi admitted that she harbored Napolitano on March 23 and on the weekend of April 1, and advised that she did not contact police as she did not want Napolitano to incur further criminal charges.

Gostonyi faces charges of possession of firearm prohibited, hinder apprehend prosecution - harbor or conceal, tamper with/fabricate physical evidence, intentional possession of controlled substance by person not registered, and use/possession of drug paraphernalia.

Gostonyi is incarcerated in the Carbon County Correctional Facility in lieu of $100,000 monetary bail. She waived charges for court in a hearing before District Judge William J. Kissner of Palmerton on Wednesday.
