Tamaqua hiring lifeguards, pool clerks for the season

Tamaqua is in spring mode and heading for the summer season, based on business undertaken at Tuesday evening’s borough council meeting.

During the meeting, council voted to advertise for part-time seasonal workers and approved participation in the Goodwill Summer Work Experience and Assessment Program.

Council hired a number of part-time lifeguards at a rate of $10 per hour, and two part-time pool clerks were hired at a rate of $9 per hour. They’ll receive an extra 25 cents per hour based on the number of years they have served in the positions.

Jay Stidham, public works director, said the street sweeping program recently got underway.

“Everybody’s street will be posted” the evening before the street sweeper passes through, Stidham said. The schedule will be available on the borough’s Facebook page and website.

Folks who don’t move their vehicles from the posted streets, he said, will risk having their cars towed and will face fines.

In an unrelated matter, council approved handicapped parking spaces applications for 520 E. Elm St. and 49 Hunter St., but denied applications for 136 Penn St. and 61 Bowe St. because the spaces would exceed the number allowed on those blocks. The denied applications will be put on waiting lists.

Council also directed Solicitor Anthony Odorizzi to prepare an ordinance regulating Dumpsters on public streets.

According to Councilwoman Kathy Kunkel, the ordinance will set up fees, time frames and other guidelines for dumpster usage.

The ordinance, she said, will help make streets safer.

In other business, council:

• Approved the resignation of part-time police patrolman Rick Bekesy.

• Accepted the resignation of Dave Mace from the borough’s zoning board.

• Will advertise for a sewer operator and assistant mechanic/street worker.

• Adopted an ordinance to vacate Vine Street from North Railroad Street to 31.5 feet west of the centerline of the railroad tracks for a Reading and Northern Railroad crossing project.
