Local Roundup: Results from April 13-14

Marian and Northwestern both gained baseball and softball wins over the weekend.

Elsewhere, Tamaqua’s softball team gained its first victory of the season, while the Pleasant Valley’s girls lacrosse squad remained undefeated.

BASEBALL

Marian-Notre Dame ES

Marian jumped out to a huge lead and coasted to a 16-4 non-league victory over Notre Dame-East Stroudsburg on Saturday.

Michael Gelatko collected three hits, one of them a home run, and knocked in two runs for the Colts, who scored seven times in the first inning, while Brian Hinkle finished with three hits, one a triple, scored three runs and knocked in two.

The winners, who improved to 5-3, received three hits and three RBIs from Lachlan Segedy.

Marian’s 15-hit attack also included a pair of hits from both Noah Bauder and Brandon Klitsch, who each added two RBIs and two runs scored. Dylan Zullo contributed a homer, three runs and two RBIs.

John Gillen had two hits for the Spartans (1-5).

Northwestern-Saucon Vy.

Northwestern used a six-run sixth inning Sunday to pull away from Saucon Valley for an 11-4 Colonial League victory.

Winning pitcher Josh Farber tossed six innings and allowed just one earned run and two walks while striking out seven. He also contributed two hits and two RBIs at the plate.

Josh Lichman collected a pair of hits, scored twice and knocked in four runs, while Eli Zimmerman added a pair of hits and three runs.

The Tigers, who have won six games in a row, are now 7-3 overall and 6-1 in the league. Saucon slipped to 4-2.

SOFTBALL

Marian-Notre Dame ES

Another strong game from Morgan Kelly on Saturday propelled Marian to a 12-1 non-league victory over Notre Dame-East Stroudsburg.

Kelly pitched a one-hitter and recorded 14 of her 15 outs via the strikeout. At the plate, she added two hits - one a home run - and three RBIs.

The Fillies (5-2) also received three hits, one a double, and three runs from Deanna Pugh.

The loss dropped the Spartans to 2-5.

Tamaqua-Jim Thorpe

Addsion Krall’s three-run homer highlighted a five-run seventh inning that helped Tamaqua gain an 8-2 Schuylkill League victory over Jim Thorpe on Saturday.

The win was the first of the year for the Blue Raiders, who are now 1-6 overall and 1-4 in the league.

Ceanna Gormley and Sophia Stilinger both singled and drove in a run for Tamaqua. Morgan Linkhorst and Madison Schock both singled and scored a run.

Paige Bumbulsky earned the win in the circle, pitching all seven innings and recording 10 strikeouts.

For Thorpe (3-5), Sarah Hartman had two hits; Mara Levins had a single, a run scored, an RBI, and two stolen bases; and Melina Schwartz doubled and scored a run.

Northwestern-Saucon Vy.

Emma Freeman pitched a two-hit shutout Sunday, leading Northwestern to a 5-0 Colonial League victory over Saucon Valley.

Freeman didn’t walk anyone and finished with 15 strikeouts.

The Tigers’ hurler was given all the runs she would need when her teammates scored four times in the opening inning.

Izzy Akelaitis collected two hits, scored twice and knocked in a run, while Abby Dunstan and Shelby Mitman both added a hit and two RBIs.

Northwestern is now 9-1 overall and 7-0 in the league, while the Panthers dropped to 1-4.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Pleasant Valley-Liberty

Devon Bush and Rylee Rath each scored five goals and added two assists to help Pleasant Valley remain unbeaten with a 17-7 victory over Liberty on Saturday.

Olivia Iandoli finished with three goals and two helpers for the Bears, now 11-0, while Gabrielle Kutzler collected a pair of goals and an assist.

The winners also received goals from Samantha Miller and Morgan Ryals. Emily Butler chipped in with two assists, while goalie Abygail Borger made three saves.

For the Hurricanes, who fell to 4-5, Marren Broesicke had two goals and an assist.

BOYS TENNIS

Palmerton-Palisades

Palisades downed Palmerton, 4-1, in Colonial League action on Saturday.

The match was played with an eight-game pro-set because of the weather and impending storm.

The Bombers’ victory came from Jared Reinhard at No. 2 singles.

Lehighton-Blue Mountain

Blue Mountain won its seventh straight match on Thursday, posting a 4-2 victory over Lehighton.

The Indians received wins at Nos. 1 and 2 singles as Bayto Cokrlija took a straight-set match at No. 1 and Bekim Cokrlija needed a tiebreaker to register a victory at No. 2.

The wins lifts the Eagles to 9-2, while Lehighton slipped to 5-3.

TRACK AND FIELD

Pan-Ram Invitational

Marian’s Alex Porambo took home the gold in the 800-meter run at the 35th Annual Pan-Ram Invitational at Central Dauphin High School on Saturday.

Porambo ran the event in 2:02.12. The senior edged Daniel Naylor of Red Lion by .41.

Marian’s Carly Minchhoff also finished third in the javelin with a mark of 121-01, while Jim Thorpe’s Stacy Bos claimed a third in the 3200 with a time of 13:13.06.

Other top-five finishers included Marian’s Albin Petschauer (fourth in 3200, 10:20.04) and Jesse Rodino (fifth in discus, 141-7), and Jim Thorpe’s Leah Wasko (fifth in triple jump, 34-0 1/4), Mara Levins (fifth in discus, 97-3), Bowden Chicarelli (fifth in 3200, 11:28.57) and the boys 1600 relay team (fifth, 3:42.53).

JR. HIGH SOFTBALL

Weatherly-Panther Valley

Kiki Wolfgang had four hits, scored twice and knocked in a pair of runs to help Panther Valley roll to a recent 22-2 victory over Weatherly.

The win was the first-ever for PV’s junior high softball program.

The Panthers also received three hits, three runs and an RBI from Sadie Mae Frets, while Savannah Pierce added a home run, two runs and two RBIs. Bailey Snyder chipped in with a double, two runs and two RBIs,
