Kokinda wins gold at youth wrestling tourney

Tamaqua’s Aubrey Kokinda recently placed first at the Pennsylvania Junior State Wrestling Tournament in Pittsburgh.

A total of six area wrestlers earned medals at the annual event, with Kokinda earning the only gold.

Kokinda topped the field in the girls 12-and-under 66-pound class, earning a 6-4 decision win in the championship bout.

Northwestern’s Hunter Vermeulen placed third in the boys 10-and-under 55-pound weight class, while Northwestern’s Cael Vermeulen and Madeline Werner finished fourth in their respective weight class. Vermeulen was fourth in the boys 8-and-under 50-pound category, while Werner competed in the girls 10-and-under 56-pound bracket.

Earning a sixth-place medal was Northwestern’s Sadie Werner, who wrestled at 94 pounds in the girls 10-and-under class, while Northern Lehigh’s Tucker Hosier finished seventh in the boys 8-and under 65-pound competition.
