Local roundup: Results from April 9

Northwestern picked up wins in three different sports on Tuesday.

The Tigers recorded victories in baseball, softball and boys lacrosse.

Marian (baseball, softball) and Lehighton (baseball, tennis) also posted wins in two sports.

BASEBALL

Shenandoah-Marian

Cole Defrancisco allowed three hits and one run over five innings to help Marian to a 5-2 Schuylkill League victory over Shenandoah Valley.

Nate Davidovich pitched the final two innings for Marian. Rocco Griguoli had two hits and RBIs for the Colts, who evened their mark at 3-3.

John Burke had two hits for Shenandoah Valley, which remained winless (0-5).

Palmerton-So. Lehigh

Janssen Brown fired a three-hitter and knocked in two runs to lead Southern Lehigh to an 8-3 Colonial League victory over Palmerton.

Colton Sams added two hits for the Spartans, who evened their record at 3-3.

Jacob Grammes went 3-for-3 with an RBI for Palmerton, which dropped its fifth straight (2-6).

Tamaqua-Pine Grove

A three-run fifth inning put Tamaqua over the top in a 6-4 Schuylkill League win over Pine Grove.

Mason Ligenza gave the Blue Raiders (6-1 overall; 3-0 SL) the lead in the decisive fifth with a two-run home run over the right field fence, which gave the visitors a 4-3 advantage. With two outs, and two batters later, Luke Kane added an insurance run with a solo shot to centerfield. Kane also added an RBI-single.

Ligenza started and earned the pitching win, striking out 10 and allowing three runs (all unearned), with one walk.

Lehighton-Jim Thorpe

Carter Birnbaum had three hits with three RBIs to lead Lehighton to a 12-7 Schuylkill League victory over Jim Thrope.

Brady O’Donnell and Cole Dietz each added two hits for the Indians, who raised their record to 6-2.

Brody Schrantz, Owen Hubbard, and Mason Domski each had two hits for Jim Thorpe, which dropped its fifth straight (1-6).

Pleasant Vy.-Nazareth

Nazareth broke open a 3-3 game with five-run fourth inning and went on to a 13-3 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory over Pleasant Valley.

Matt Daems had two hits and four RBIs, and David Bertz had two hits and three RBIs for Nazareth (5-2).

Pleasant Valley, which committed six errors, dropped to 2-5 overall.

Northwestern-Bangor

Shaun O’Donnell tossed a gem on the mound, as Northwestern came away with a 3-1 Colonial League win over Bangor.

O’Donnell, the Tigers’ starting pitcher, went the distance, recorded 11 strikeouts, walked two and only allowed three hits to earn the win on the bump.

After tying up the game at 1-1 in the fourth inning, the Tigers (5-3 overall; 4-1 CL) got the runs they needed to support O’Donnell. Josh Lichman scored on an RBI single by Watson Church to give NW a one-run lead. Nolan Fitzgerald added an insurance run with an RBI single to left field, as Church crossed home plate.

Lichman finished with a single, double and a run scored.

SOFTBALL

Shenandoah-Marian

Marian’s Morgan Kelly tossed a one-hit shutout to lead the Fillies to a 15-0 Schuylkill League win over Shenandoah Valley.

Kelly also had a home run and a triple and knocked in three runs. Malina Letcher added two hits and three RBIs for Marian (4-1).

Kelly and Emily Upanavage each scored three runs.

Northwestern-Bangor

Shelby Mitman collected four hits with an RBI, and Abby Dunstan had three hits and two RBIs to lead Northwestern to a 13-4 Colonial League win over Bangor.

Elizabeth Diehl scattered six hits in her complete-game, 12-strikeout performance. She added two hits for Northwestern (7-1).

Ella Bressi also had two hits, and Isabella Akelaitis chipped in with two hits and RBIs.

Bangor dipped to 1-5 overall.

Palmerton-So. Lehigh

Carly Gaffney twirled a three-hitter and struck out 10 to pace Palmerton to a 14-2 Colonial League win over Southern Lehigh.

Syndey Frantz, Emily Christopher, and Madison Green each had two hits for Palmerton, which raised its record to 6-1.

With the loss, Southern Lehigh fell to 1-4.

Tamaqua-Pine Grove

Madison Shiffer drove in five runs, two of them on an inside-the park homer, to lift Pine Grove to an 11-0 Schuylkill League victory over Tamaqua.

The Cardinals’ Jamie Dinger limited the Blue Raiders to three hits and struck out 11. Meadow Umbanhaver and Bella Kassab each had two hits for Pine Grove (8-1).

With the defeat, Tamaqua sank to 0-5.

Pleasant Vy.-Nazareth

Avery Kauffman allowed three hits and struck out 10 over 5 2/3 innings to help Nazareth to a 5-2 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory over Pleasant Valley.

Shauna McNamee had two hits and three RBIs for Nazareth, which won its fourth straight (5-1).

Jovie Valenzuela hit a two-run homer for Pleasant Valley, which slipped to 3-2.

BOYS LACROSSE

So. Lehigh-N’western

Northwestern snapped a two-game losing streak with an 11-4 win over Southern Lehigh in Colonial League action.

Blaine Snyder (one assist), Michael Lagowy and Tyler Kaas each had three goals for the Tigers (4-2). Devon Hildebrand (two assists) and Stone Sosnovik (assist) also scored, while Josh Wambold had an assist and Bailen Smargiassi made 10 saves.

Cole Mack scored twice for the Spartans (3-3).

BOYS TENNIS

Liberty-Pleasant Vy.

In Eastern Pennsylvania Conference action, Liberty blanked Pleasant Valley for a 6-0 win.

Luke Appleman, David Broczkowski and Fineas Brown swept singles play for the Hurricanes, who remained unbeaten at 13-0 on the season.

The Bears slipped to 7-6 overall.

Bayto Cokrilja and Bekim Cokrilja secured singles’ victories for the Indians, who improved to 4-2 on the season. Michael Bowman and Jed Cortes added a doubles’ play win.
